HOW TO VIEW NBR STREAMING VIDEO -- WHERE TO FIND SERIOUS MARKET COVERAGE ON TV
LINKING TO TV INTERVIEWS... We've been asked about the possibility of allowing our website members to link directly to my TV interviews. We're happy to offer that additional service -- when it's possible to do so. Those of you who wish to view my Friday evening (March 7) interview on the Nightly Business Report with Paul Kangas can view it right from their site at NBR.com. Click on "Streaming Video" along the top of their home page. That will present you with several video options. Click on "Weekly Market Monitor Interview". You may have to download the FREE Real Player to view the video. You can do that by hitting "click here" just above the video menu. While you're on the NBR site, you might want to view some of their other video options. In my opinion, it's the best evening wrapup of the markets that you'll find on TV.
TV INTERVIEWS VS. WRITING ON A WEBSITE... Although TV interviews are fun to do -- and I enjoy doing them -- they leave a lot to be desired in both time and content. TV interviews are very short (rarely more than three or four minutes) -- and are limited in the amount of content that can be included -- espcially when it comes to technical analysis. I learned that during my years when I was the technical analyst for CNBC. In fact, my frustration with the limitations of TV analysis got to the point that I left that medium to write on the Internet. The Internet allows me to take as much time as I need to explain my point of view -- and to supplement that with the proper charts. I can take the time to explain things in more depth and -- when necessary -- to point out the necessary qualifications and caveats. Even so, TV interviews allow us to reach a wider audience and -- when done properly -- can provide some service to TV viewers. And if they want more, they can get it on our website. Not all TV shows are equal in value however. Some are more "serious" than others.
WHERE TO VIEW SERIOUS BUSINESS TV... For evening viewing of the day's market events, I highly recommend the Nightly Business Report. It airs for thirty minutes starting at 6:30 pm (NYT) each evening on PBS. It's the best half hour of daily market coverage that you'll find on television. Bloomberg TV presents a whole day of serious business and market coverage -- which includes a healthy dose of technical analysis. You may need Direct or Satellite TV to watch it on TV -- since it's not widely available on cable. If you don't have that, much of their TV coverage can be viewed from their website (www.Bloomberg.com). Cnn fn also does a good job of covering business and the markets throughout the day -- although its TV availability is also somewhat limited. CNBC is still the most widely-watched business network during the day. Unfortunately, its business content has become increasingly diluted by non-business coverage. CNBC also seems to have abandoned technical analysis -- which, in my opinion, is a serious omission. If you like the visual part of CNBC, try viewing it with the mute buttom. They do have the best-looking anchors.
