StockCharts Insider: How to Use the New StockCharts Search Tool Like a Pro
Before We Dive In…
Sure, it’s a search tool, but what matters is how you use it. StockCharts’ new search digs deep into the archive and pulls up the most relevant content. I’ll show you how I optimize its use to find indicators, tutorials, market analysis, and explainers for general market concepts.
Suppose you’re looking for information on how to use an indicator, but also want to see how it’s being applied in a real-market context. Or maybe you’re looking for expert technical takes on a given stock or asset to balance all of the fundamental news you typically get in most financial media.
This is what’s useful about StockCharts’ new search tool: It digs through its entire archive, from evergreen explainers to current expert analysis, and gives you these results, categorized so that you know exactly which content to look at.
Let me give you a few examples of how I use the new search tool.
Need some info on an indicator?
Let’s say I want to learn more about the Ichimoku Cloud indicator. I type the name of the indicator into the search bar and here’s what I got.
Spot the Scholar’s Cap? That’s ChartSchool
See the scholar cap icon at the top left of the first two results? Click those articles and you'll land in ChartSchool. This is your go-to for a comprehensive breakdown—what the indicator does, how it’s calculated, and how to use it effectively.
See the Question Mark? That’s Your How-To.
If you see a question mark icon, that means the article links to a more technical “how-to” tutorial. In this case, you'll get a walkthrough of how to set up a scan for stocks using the Ichimoku Cloud as a filter.
See the Article Icon? You Guessed It… It’s an Article.
The pieces show you how indicators are used in market analysis. The cool part? Different experts have their own nuanced take on how to use them. In other words, indicators aren’t a one-size-fits-all solution.
You’ll see how one indicator can be used in multiple ways across different market conditions, giving you fresh ideas for your analysis.
Need a stock breakdown (but forgot the ticker)?
What if I’m searching for a technical breakdown of a stock, like Applied Materials, Inc., but I forgot the ticker symbol?
If that happens, I can click the "Symbol Catalog" circle to find the ticker, in this case, AMAT, and then…
I type that in, and then select "Entire Site" to find articles on the stock.
You’ll see articles from different authors, each with their own nuanced approaches and interpretations. Same stock, different angles. Pretty cool, right?
Looking for something bigger, like a market concept?
Now what if what I’m looking for is not an indicator or stock, but a general market concept, like Dow Theory? For that, I just type in my search query and everything that’s relevant comes up.
As you can see, the search brought forth several market commentaries along with a ChartSchool deep-dive.
And That’s a Wrap
As you can see, almost every technical indicator, concept, or application is somewhere in StockCharts’ knowledge base. Plus, you get to see how these are applied in a current market context from several experts. Give it a try yourself, and see how fast you can go from “What is this?” to “Now I get it.”
